Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris born October 20 1964) is an American politician and lawyer who is the 49th and current vice-president of the United States. She is the first female vice president and the highest-ranking female official in U.S. history, as well as the first African American and first Asian American vice president. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she served as an United States senator representing California between 2017-2021. Harris was born and raised in Oakland, California. Harris began her career at the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. After that, she was enlisted to join the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she was elected the city's district attorney. She was elected Attorney General of California in 2010, and was re-elected in 2014. From 2017 to 2021, Harris was the junior United States senator for California. Harris defeated Loretta Martinez in the 2016 Senate election to become the 2nd African American woman and first South Asian American senator to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she was a vocal advocate for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a path towards citizenship for immigrants without a legal status as well as the DREAM Act, a ban on assault weapons, and progressive tax reform. She earned national attention for her pointed questioning of Trump administration officials in Senate hearings, which included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and was accused of sexual assault.
